About Zoion Diagnostics

Founded in 1995, Zoion Diagnostics offers a new approach to human tissue collection for Genomic and Proteomic research applications.

Zoion Process

The “Zoion Process” is one in which the client researcher and the Zoion Diagnostics team create a study protocol for tissue collection, analysis and shipment. The intent of the Zoion Process is to exact the donor profile for each study, thereby collecting only specimens that are specific to the research for which they will be analyzed. By maximizing the variety of available specimens and optimizing their quality and clinical definition, our approach, the Zoion Process, facilitates saving time, cost and efforts required for meaningful research. The true value of the Zoion Process is that tissue collection is done prospectively. Collection begins following a joint effort between the Zoion Diagnostics staff and the client research team to carefully define the donor profile. An added value to the process is the flexibility that our client researchers have to modify their prospective study at any time in response to unexpected research results.

Protective Screen

Patient confidentiality, especially when genetic testing is involved, is a primary concern for the patient donor, the hospital and for the client researcher. A trademark of Zoion Diagnostics from its inception, the protection of patient confidentiality is now a statutory requirement. Many Genomic research groups have decided that the best protection is the use of a third party who guarantees the anonymity of the donor and hospital, as well as the client researcher. To date, Zoion Diagnostics has successfully fulfilled this role for numbers of clients. Here’s how -

  • After development of the study protocol, Zoion Diagnostics’ staff identifies medical facilities appropriate for the study and assumes responsibility for all subsequent interactions with the hospital and patient donor. These interactions include the preparation and submission of applications to IRBs, the negotiation of hospital contracts, and the training of hospital staff members in the collection, processing and the preservation of specimens.

  • All of the specimens and supporting documentation arrive directly at Zoion Diagnostics from the hospital study coordinator, who removes the patient identifiers and assigns the file a unique code. Each specimen is carefully tracked and referenced by code number. Should the study protocol require additional information from the patient donor file, the study coordinator at the medical facility refers to the confidential master list. From Zoion Diagnostics, the specimens are immediately sent to the client researcher; the code is the only identifier available to the client researcher. In this manner, the names and details of all parties involved remain confidential.

Among its many existing clients, Zoion Diagnostics is considered a valuable and unique resource because of the variety and consistent quality of the specimens that are available to our client research teams. Zoion Diagnostics is affiliated with hospital teams that are on call 24 hours / 7 days a week so that the surgical tissue specimens are harvested and quickly frozen per the established donor profiles. All post-mortem tissue collection is harvested by rapid necropsy procedures and frozen within 3-4 hours, minimizing degradation and therefore, research error.

We are ready to provide you with the project-specific, well-documented tissue specimens that will advance your groundbreaking research and analytical discoveries.
